Session Log
Note: The session begins with Chance rebuilding his character, Saferous, as an Alchemist.
We catch up Luke and Chance who both missed last session and pick up where the adventurers left off - recovering in an abandoned water treatment plant in the sewers of the cogs in Sharn.
After a brief discussion they realize that if they abandon the sewers to rest and recover they might run into members of the Red Jackals again. This would be a problem if they don't discover the party has murdered three of their members - they would have to make good the ground they covered.
Alicia tells the others that if they are patient she can spent time using her divine abilities to heal everyone up. This will take over an hour as she uses her lay-on-hands ability repeatedly (she can effectively do one casting every 10 minutes). Further, once Eriana and Ferdinand are fully healed by the magic and rest for a while (10 minutes) they no longer feel the negative effects of the combat (i.e. they both loose their wounded condition).
During this period of rest and healing everyone else remains on watch as Alicia must spent most of the time in quiet prayer to Dol Arrah. As they rest a couple members of the group think they can hear a faint metal clanging noise coming from somewhere in the sewer tunnels. It does not last for very long.
Eriana decides to take the armor and clothing off the Red Jackal leader they killed (Tai-Chaik) and make a disguise to look like one of the shifters.
When they are all rested the group continue in the direction indicated on their map with Sarroxtíoð in the lead.
Eventually they turn a corner and spot torchlight up ahead. They switch up their order slightly with Eriana in the lead with her disguise. They find the source of the light - a male human holding a torch next to a large iron door. He is accompanied by a large warforged person and a small strange creature none of them have seen before.
Eriana tries the ruse of saying they are the Red Jackals and these people are trespassing. The warforged steps up menacingly and says "Oh no - I told your friends we aren't paying and to piss off! They took the hint, so should you". Eriana finds the intense glare of the warforged quite intimidating, and she grows slightly fearful.
However, realizing they may be on the same side, Sarroxtíoð pulls out Thi-Chaik's severed head and displays it and tells the warforged "It's OK, we killed these ones!"
It is hard to tell if the warforged is surprised, but he pauses for a moment and says "Ok then. Why are you here?"
After a brief discussion and introduction they discover that the old professor hired more than just one group. He also hired the warforged, Bloody Spear, and his ally Saferous to recover the artifact. They found the entrance to the lab as the professor described, but were unable to open the door.
Bloody Spear was in the process of trying to make a crude forgery of an artifact when the party arrived. Erina steps up to the door with a crowbar and asks if she can try to open it (she and Sarroxtíoð noticed visible signs of rust on the iron door. Bloody Spear and Saferous agree and move aside.
After a few minutes of effort, the ancient rusty door is forced open with the crowbar, breaking the lock holding it shut in the process.
Pushing the door open they find a hallway about 60 feel long opening into a larger chamber beyond. There is a door on the west wall to their right about 40 feet along the passage, and a passage heading east at the 25 foot mark. Between the east passage and door on the west wall are several barrels.
Sarroxtíoð marches straight down the hallway into the far chamber, noticing the open barrel appears to be filled with small metal bits as he walks by.
He enters what appears to be a large chamber, the laboratory perhaps. The room, excluding entry, is roughly 30 by 30 feet. There are a total of eight vats of various sizes by the walls. All of them are six-feet tall but of varying volume. They are filled to the top with liquid substances that radiate a faint green light. It could not be water, not after this long. The liquid inside the vats is blue or green but appear to be thicker than water. The way it bubbles, it appears similar to oil. From where you stand at the entry, the vats do not appear to be empty.
The floor is littered with metal implements, rusty instruments, and all kinds of laboratory paraphernalia. It looks as if someone had trashed the place before abandoning it. It was not a recent event; the dust layer is thick in this chamber.
There are two metal tables in the middle of the room. One is empty, but the other one has something on it. The object on the table radiates faint green light. It is two and a half feet long and appears to be a brown colored stone cog. There appear to be circles of inscriptions on its face. This may be the artifact you have been looking for!
Sarroxtíoð calls this out to the group and steps up to get a close look at the presumed artifact. As he approaches the ancient artifact, it begins to vibrate; a thumping low pitched vibration he can feel in his bones. The vibration is stronger and weaker in a pattern similar to that of a heartbeat. The schema rises from the table, floating a few inches from the table’s surface.
The little trinkets and pieces of laboratory hardware littering the floor vibrate and start moving. Smaller objects collide into bigger ones to create an exponentially larger thing. Before you stand, within several heartbeats, 6-feet tall bodies made mostly of metal.
They don’t have hands but instead their arms end up in sharp blades. In the middle of their faces, eyes of green light glare at you from beneath foreheads bearing identical cog-shaped ghulra sigils.
There are clear differences but no one would blame you if you said they were some kind of warforged.
Suddenly, the strange warforged-like creatures violently lurch forwards to attack.
The sounds of the creatures forming attracted the rest of the party to the room. Everyone arrives to engage in melee with the constructs.
Combat is brief, with the party of seven quickly taking down the two creatures. In the process one of them bites Ferdinand and clearly poisons him. It makes him slightly weakened in the process, and fortunately saferous seems to have a universal antidote for him. Ferdinand takes a bit of damage from the poison before he manages to shake off the effects thanks to the antidote.
With the combat over, the glowing cog stops vibrating and quietly settles back onto the metal table, and stops moving. Sarroxtíoð snatches up the artifact and throws it into the sack containing the severed heads.
