Session Log
The session begins just after the combat with two animated 6-foot tall bodies made of the scrap metal in the laboratory. They reminded everyone of very crude warforged.
After the fight Bloody Spear clearly looked upset about this. Some in the party recall from their past that in the great one hundred year war House Cannith only mastered the creation of the warforged creatures a few decades before the end of the war. That means that even the oldest warforged can only be no more than 50 years old. Yet these things were animated in a laboratory that according to professor Daela has been abandoned since around the time of the War of the Mark, almost a millennia ago.
Both Ferdinand and Saferous explore the chest on the north wall while Eriana checks out some chests in one corner of the laboratory. The others take a look at a couple of balls of intricate metal pieces on each metal table - metal objects that did not form into the bodies of the creatures they defeated.
Each ball appears to be a mass of intricate mechanical parts that whir and move, showing that they are still active. When Sarroxtíoð touches one the pieces begin to move more rapidly. He picks it up and the entire thing shifts in his hand and forms into a small humanoid figurine about 5 inches tall, holding a hand axe with its arms and legs moving vigorously.
When placed back on the metal table the figuring marches about swinging the axe. The other ball of metal does the exact same thing, so both of them are left wandering about on the metal tables while the party explore the rest of the laboratory. They eventually stop moving after about 10 minutes and curl back into the ball shapes they found them in. Each one is scooped up and added to the party treasury.
Inside the chest, Ferdinand and Saferous find a leather scroll case and 20 silver coins. The chest is old and decrepit, and must have been mostly emptied long ago. The coins appear to be very ancient - likely hailing back to the very earliest days of ancient Galifar. They might be worth more to a collector than their weight in silver.
Rocinante takes a look at the leather scroll case, opening it and finding some blueprints inside. He is certain they are not magical scrolls but appear instead to be blueprints. The blueprints explain the process to build a creation forge and how to use it to make warforged. This does not make sense to him, as he knows that House Cannith only invented this technology in the last century - and this document must have been here for several millennia. it is undoubtedly valuable and surely professor Daela will pay handsomely for it.
The boxes examined by Eriana are filled with rusty scrap metal and nothing else of interest.
Each of the vats appear to contain specimens, in whole or in part, of a wide variety of creatures. Saferous thinks the strange alchemical goo they float in is some kind of preservative. The containers must be well sealed for them to have survived this long. He has no idea what purpose these specimens may have served here.
After searching the laboratory, the party double back down the hallway they passed through to the door on the south wall. There are three decrepit barrels in the hallway across from the door. One is missing the lid and it is filled with scrap metal like the boxes in the lab. Ferdinand uses his crowbar to pry open the other two barrels, revealing more scrap metal.
Examining the door, Ferdinand finds that it is locked. He uses the crowbar to pry it open and succeeds so well he thinks the locking mechanism remains undamaged.
There are several pieces of furniture inside the storage room. Most is in poor condition but still standing. Like everywhere else here, the floor and furniture are covered in a layer of dust. However, they notice the dust has been disturbed by small vermin-like footprints. Sarroxtíoð bends down and notices near the floor on the west wall are several fist-sized holes. As he looks at them with others milling around in the room the holes begin to disgorge a horde of rats!
After a few rounds of combat the party manage to kill off the multitude of rats, though some of the party do end up suffering numerous bites.
Examining the room afterwards turns up 10 more ancient Galifar coins to go with the 20 they found previously. They also find a set of 9 statuettes of the Sovereign Host deities. The statuettes of Boldrei and Dol Dorn are broken, but the other 7 remain intact. Alicia recognized these and adds them to the party loot.
From here the party head back down the hall to the side-passage they saw heading east. It goes for 15 feet before turning south down a set of stair that descend 10 feet into another storage room. Both Ferdinand and Sarroxtíoð head into the room well ahead of the rest of the party.
As they enter the chamber, a noise disturbs the peace in the room; a screeching sound of metal on metal. Some of the swords on the walls start to vibrate and detach from their mounts. Most of the swords only fly for a few seconds before falling to the floor inert. The others float in the air as if an invisible warrior were wielding them.
These swords attack with the rest of the party running down into the room to help in the combat.
It takes a few rounds to destroy the animated weapons. They are resistant to damage and hard to hit, and ranged weapons did not seem like a good idea to try against them. During the combat, Eriana successfully managed to grapple a sword, but failed to do any damage to it. This did tie up the weapon for a round trying to pull free, and the second time it simply tried to hit her while she held onto it - landing a critical blow on her back that nearly paralyzed her.
Her second attempt was much better, resulting in the quick destruction of the last animated sword.
The others had success with spells and melee attacks that slowly whittled past he hardness of the swords, and managed to break them.
Just prior to the combat Alicia had used her lay on hands ability on herself, and she used it again during combat to patch up Ferdinand.
This session ends just as the combat ends.
