Session Log
Combat against the presumed Emerald Claw camp continues...
The party found itself fighting on two fronts. Alicia, Eriana, and Ferdinand continue combat on the north end of the camp while Rocinante, Saferous, and Sarroxtíoð fight on the south end of the camp.
Early in the fight Ferdinand runs to attack two unarmored guards between both groups while Alicia and Eriana find themselves facing one armored opponent who is also a spellcaster and a few other unarmored guards.
Ferdinand makes a powerful attack against one guard and almost takes him out, but soon finds himself in trouble as a female spellcaster joins the fight from the middle of the burning camp.
All of the guards employ a similar tactic using their flails - they typically use their first attack in an attempt to wrap the flail chain around their opponents legs and trip them. Afterwards they follow up with melee attacks against their prone opponents. The guards are skilled fighters who are able to take advantage of opponents who try to stand up after being tripped (i.e. they have Reactive Strike).
With these tactics Ferdinand finds himself getting tripped with two guards attacking him. He keeps in the fight by drinking a Healing Potion (Lesser) but ends up getting knocked out shortly afterwards.
Alicia and Eriana are separated from Ferdinand and end up fighting three guards and the armored spellcaster. Alicia recognizes right away that the armored spellcaster is wearing a Blood of Vol holy symbol, so she assumes this is a priest. The two of them start off doing fairly well, taking out one guard and wounding another. One guard was holding back using a crossbow and another was recovering from a fumble.
During the combat Alicia notices a robed female running northwards from the camp towards the intact buildings. She is moving with unnatural speed, but is to far away to interact with.
When Ferdinand gets knocked out Alicia heard him call out in pain. She runs out of this combat to try and reach him to help. This leaves Eriana fighting on her own, and she also happened to be lying prone at the time after being tripped by a guard.
Fortunately, Alicia is able to reach Ferdinand and apply her Lay on Hands ability to him, allowing him to recover. Running into the melee was costly however, as the priest seems to recognize here, chases after Alicia and quickly knock her out. The other guard thinks Ferdinand is still down, so he breaks off to fight the group to the south.
Realizing she is alone, Eriana runs to join Alicia and discovers she is down but Ferdinand is standing up to join the fight. Those two end up in combat with the last three unarmored guards nearby. The female spellcaster is nowhere to be seen.
To the south (and overlapping a few rounds of combat), Sarroxtíoð finds himself in tough with a guard. He is constantly tripped and tries several times to regain his footing only to be tripped again. It slows down the combat and hampers his fighting ability, but despite his opponents success at tripping him they have a hard time hitting him when he is down.
Saferous helps out by lobbing several volatile vials at the enemy, but he has trouble hitting directly. The splashing damage does have some effect, and seems to hurt the zombie. The zombie was fighting a summoned skeleton from Rocinante, which it manages to destroy.
Meanwhile, Rocinante finds himself in a good position to support the barbarian, using his Electric Arc cantrip to zap a guard and the zombie. During the combat they see a female spellcaster off in the distance. She pulls out a thin stick and points it at Rocinante, unleashing a couple of bolts of force that slam into him. Shortly afterwards that spellcaster ducks back into the game and is not seen again.
Sarroxtíoð comes to the realization that trying to keep standing up with one of these skilled opponents is not working well, so he swings at them while prone. With his powerful strength and the fact that they are unarmored, he is able to land a few good blows. He takes out one guard and a couple of others run in to join the fight.
Meanwhile, the zombie does get taken out with an Electric Arc cantrip by Rocinante (it critically fails its saving throw and explodes). Resorting to melee, Saferous runs into melee with a dagger to help out Sarroxtíoð and managed to finish off one of the two guards attacking him.
At this point both fights are getting close to each other. Ferdinand gets knocked out again, this time by the armored priest but not before he did manage to wound the spellcaster. Only Eriana remains standing against the priest and two guards. Fortunately for her the battle to the south has come to order and Rocinante is able to help.
Before the wizard gets there, Eriana takes out one guard but is herself badly wounded.
When Rocinante arrives he unleashes another Electric Arc cantrip at the priest and the remaining guard. Both fail and are taken out by the spell! (The priest critically fails, and dies to and impressive blast of lightning).
With all of the opponents defeated, Eriana runs over to Alicia, grabs the Healing Potion (Lesser) from her and pours it down her neck. She had already stabilized, and now recovers thanks to the healing magic of the potion. She then gets up and uses her last Lay on Hands ability to heal up the unconscious Ferdinand. Both she and Ferdinand took the worst of the fight (both have the Wounded 2 condition - Alicia for being knocked out with a critical hit, and Ferdinand for being knocked out twice in the combat).
The victorious group stand together as the camps burn. The horses are all tethered up, but are making a terrible racket and stomping the ground of odd glass, making quite a racket.
Note: this was a very difficult battle that threatened to wipe out the entire party. Consequently, it earned each of the characters enough experience points to advance to 2nd level.
